COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND CAPACITY BUILDING
To reduce stigma and increase acceptance of mental illness and of persons suffering from mental disorders, Parivartan organizes several programs like seminars, workshops, CME for mental health professionals, persons suffering from mental health professionals, persons suffering from mental illness, caregivers, and civil society.
- WORLD SCHIZOPHRENIA DAY : World Schizophrenia Day was observed on May 24 at Sukhna Lake.The aim of World Schizophrenia Day is to fight stigma and make people more aware of this mental disorder. On that day, students and staff of Department of Psychiatry, GMCH, in collaboration with Parivartan organized a skit in which showed the story of family in that faced the Schizophrenic illness. Also aware the society regarding the schizophrenic illness signs, symptoms, prevention, treatment etc.
2. WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY: It was observed on September 10, with the theme “working together for a suicide free city “. It was celebrated at sukhna lake and organized a skit to showcase faulty parenting , bullying at school and break-up that create unmanageable stress and some times lead to suicide, lectures. Also aware the society by lectures, banners etc.
3. WORLD ALZHEMER’S DAY: World Alzheimer’s Day was observed on September 21 to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. On that day, Parivartan collaboration with Departments with psychiatry, GMCH raised awareness to caregivers of Alzheimer’s patient at B-Block, GMCH 32, Chandigarh.
4.WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY: (October 10) is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. On this day, On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, 10th October 2020, the NGO Parivartan in collaboration with Mental Health Institute, Sector 32, Chandigarh organized a webinar on “Home Based Strategies to Handle and Care for Persons with Mental Illness”.
This program was specifically designed for the caregivers of Persons with Mental Illness (PMIs) as how they took care of them during the COVID-19 pandemic. The related queries were handled by the panel of experts comprising of Dr. Subhash Das ( Associate Professor, Psychiatry & MS, MHI), Ms. Shikha Tyagi ( Assistant Professor, PSW & General Secretary, Parivartan). Additionally the legal assistance and information was provided by lawyers from State Legal Services Authority (SLSA), Mr. Rajeshwar Singh, Law Officer, SLSA, Chandigarh and Mr. Pardeep Kumar, Panel Lawyer, SLSA, Chandigarh.
5.WORLD DISABILITY DAY: (December 03) The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated every year on 3rd December since 1992. The observance is marked the world over to intensify efforts aimed at sustained effective action with a view to improving the situation of persons with disabilities. Mental Health Institute, Sector 32 Chandigarh and NGO Parivartan in collaboration has organised a webinar on “Strategies to handle stigma for person with mental illness and their caregivers”. Program was planned for the caregivers and Person with mental illness that how they encounter stigma and how they handle in their day to day life.
The panel of experts,Dr.PritiArun (Professor &Chairperson Disbaility Board),Dr.Subhash Das ( Associate Professor, Psychiatry & MS, MHI), Dr.Nidhi Malhotra (Assistant Professor & Consultant incharge of disability Clinic, MHI) guided few strategies to handle stigma and also skillfully handled the queries and concerns of the family members
6. Dr. B S Chavan Memorial Rehabilitation Program: To commemorate the work done in the field of mental health in tri-city (Chandigarh-Panchkulla-Mohali) by late Prof B S Chavan, (founder president of Parivartan) NGO Parivartan along with GRIID celebrated “Dr B S Memorial Rehabilitation Programme” on 24th March 2022 at Sarai building, O block, GMCH 32, Chandigarh. The event commenced with Saraswati Vandana performed by especially able children of GRIID and residents of Half Way Home followed by a short talk by Dr. Priti Arun about the life and work of Dr B S Chavan. The occasion was marked by the inauguration of book “Leadership in Indian Psychiatry” by Dr. Shakuntala and Dr. Jasbinder Kaur Director Principal of GMCH and initiation of‘ Dr B S Chavan memorial award’ by Parivartan to be given annually to NGO’s in India doing seminal work in the field of rehabilitation and community psychiatry. For the year 2021-22, the award was conferred to Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF). Dr R Padmavati, Director SCARF graced the occasion with her kind presence and received the award on behalf of SCARF. Additionally Dr. S Murthy spoke on importance of “Emotional health of caregivers” via online mode and Mr. Jitender Solanki (Financial planner) held an interactive session on “Financial planning for persons with mental illness/intellectual disability”. 200 participants attended the program.
